Expert Q&A
My daughter is in her eighth month, and is absolutely vicious toward everyone. Is this caused by depression? It was the same way with her first child. I am very concerned, as she is usually a pleasant person, but she seems to be alienating everyone.
A general feeling of anger may be one symptom of depression, but there are usually several other symptoms that must be present before someone is diagnosed as "clinically depressed." These relate to changes in mood, sleep, eating, energy, interest and suicidal feelings. Perhaps your daughter is feeling overwhelmed and exhausted, or physically uncomfortable at this point, and lashing out at others is the only way she knows how to handle it. Have you spoken to her about your concerns? She may need a safe person for her to express her feelings towards, who will not lash out at her in return. At a calm time between the two of you, you might want to tell her how concerned you are about the changes in her and that you would be willing to help her get the help she needs so that she can feel better.
