Expert Q&A
Question:
A friend of mine is having anxiety attacks such that she cannot sleep. She is in her third trimester and has not had anything similar during the previous pregnancies. What should she do? What can I do to help?
Answer:
A bit of anxiety in the third trimester is probably normal, but when it becomes severe enough that she is having actual attacks and it starts interfering with sleep, then she probably should start seeking out professional help. A psychologist could work with her on drug-free ways to manage her anxiety, either through relaxation therapy or cognitive behavioural techniques. A psychiatrist or obstetrician familiar with prescribing small amounts of anti-anxiety symptoms during pregnancy could also be a good resource.

You can continue to be a good friend by allowing your friend to talk with you about her worries without telling her that she is being "silly" or "ridiculous," and by reassuring her that her symptoms will go away with time. You can also distract her; for example, if the anxiety attacks occur during the day, you can permit her to give you a call and speak with you when she is feeling badly. Feeling supported may be all she needs to get through an attack.
